EMDR Therapy

Our professional and confidential EMDR Therapy sessions are available in-person and online to help you feel like you again.

What is EMDR and how does it work?

Our minds are great in that they process information from what we’ve heard, seen, felt, touched and smelled. Our minds usually heal, repair and process whilst we’re asleep during a process called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. The best way to describe REM sleep is to think of this: have you ever seen someone asleep and noticed their eyes darting from side to side? During this time, their mind is processing information, healing and repairing.

Sometimes the brain’s ability to process information can be impaired when we experience a traumatic or frightening event that’s overwhelming. This means that memories are then stored incorrectly in the brain and are triggered when we are reminded of what has happened. This means your brain thinks the same traumatic event is happening now. EMDR uses specialist techniques to help you to process trauma memories in a natural way. Think of it as jump-starting a car… we are jump starting the brain to help it process incomplete or past memories.

Find out more about PTSD and complex trauma over in our Wellbeing Hub, where we talk about why we might experience PTSD, what it is and what happens in our mind during a traumatic or frightening event.

EMDR can help you with:

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Complicated grief

Phobias

Help to manage and reduce your phobias of specific objects or situations.

Anxiety

Support if you’re feeling anxious, stuck, overwhelmed, or low in mood.

Panic attacks

Supportive guidance and advice to help you manage feelings of panic attacks.

What happens during EMDR?

First, you’ll meet with your therapist and get to know each other over a few sessions. Your therapist will spend time preparing you to begin EMDR, and help you to find ways of coping with upsetting memories.

EMDR uses specific movements to help you to begin processing. You and your therapist will find the right technique that feels most comfortable for you. During your treatment, your therapist will ask you questions about your thoughts and feelings.

EMDR can feel emotionally intense at first, but this reduces over time as your memories are processed. Sometimes, we might notice that different memories have come up - that’s normal, and your therapist will guide and support you to notice that.

The most common question we hear is: "will I be awake during treatment?” and our answer is always YES. You always remain awake and in control - EMDR is not hypnosis.

More about EMDR sessions

This depends on what you and your therapist have agreed to focus on together, but it is usual to have at least 10 to 20 sessions, either weekly or fortnightly. Sessions are 50 minutes or 90 minutes, depending on what works best.

You and your therapist will check in regularly to see how you are finding your therapy sessions and agree together on when you will finish treatment.

The cost of our EMDR sessions varies depending on session length and location. Our 90-minute sessions are only available in person. For more information see our Prices page.
